I'm using a wl-500gP, FreeWRT 1.0.3 and Gentoo as well ;)

When the image from WIB is working on your box, you could try to do a "mdt 
erase" before reflashing.

I really cannot think of anything that could be wrong but make sure you 
enter "make clean" before compiling FreeWRT. Oh, and make sure you get a cup 
of coffee when the device is rebooting after flashing. The first time I 
flashed my wl-500gP it took about 30 minutes ;).
