ITS use different mail servers for student and faculty accounts. Evolution can take care of the Exchange stuff. We do not have Exchange for students AFAIK. However, both students and staff members can use POP3 emails, which doesn't do the sync job very well - e.g. you download your mails, and your mails get deleted on server. And it gets very confusing when you want to check your email on a couple of different devices/platforms.

I don't really know how people deal with this, but my take in the past is to forward all my mails to gmail which is sort of good. Later I found out that fastmail.fm is even much better for $5/yr. It has a standard IMAP4 (unlike gmail), POP3 and a LDAP server so you can pretty much use any mail client to use with it. I'm using Fastmail SMTP server to send mails "on behalf of" [email protected] on Apple Mail.app

From what I know, ITS uses Outlook to maintain faculty email. But at
the same time I remember Don's and Dr. Beck's desktop setup: Don uses
mutt and Dr. Beck retrieves his email via the built-in Apple Mail
application. Generally, Outlook cannot be integrated with *nix very
well so I am wondering what ITS does to increase Outlook's
interoperability.
