Believe it or not, Arafat was fairly moderate. He was a trained
engineer (Cairo University) and a known quantity. I could not
understand why so many folks wanted him dead because engineers are
easier to understand and predict (than say, politicians). I used to
ask folks: what do you think you are going to get when Arafat is gone?
We now know the answer.

For completeness, I'm not making any excuses for some of his
colleagues. Some are clearly part of the problem (it takes two (or
more) to dance, and Islam is only one of the partners in this orgy).
