Maybe i could say something on this ...

as a programmer working in Switzerland, i've NEVER made a site with just
ONE language.

there was a comment in this thread about the messiness of using one
directory for all your images when they are language dependent.

I prefer one directory. the key to cleanliness is where you put the
language variable. if you put it at the beginning of the image name
instead of the end, all your images are neatly arranged according to
language. eg:

#lan#_link1.gif on your template and de_link1.gif, fr_link1.gif, and
it_link1.gif in your images directory.

then i also know at a glance which images are what language, which you
may not if they are same name in seperate directories. more useful to
me.

the #lan# file naming scheme can also come in handy when applying unique
layout files for each language.

cfset fusebox.layoutFile = "#lan#_mainlayout.cfm

as you might guess, i'm setting the "lan" variable up in the url.

here are the change the language XFA declarations:

XFA.italian = '#self#?fuseaction=#attributes.fuseaction#&lan=it';
XFA.german = '#self#?fuseaction=#attributes.fuseaction#&lan=de';
XFA.german = '#self#?fuseaction=#attributes.fuseaction#&lan=fr';

simple and effective.
