Many Thanks! This was the hint I needed. The Logitech iTouch software
on this particular remote machine is apparently doing funky things
with shift states behind my back. I don't press NumLock, but it apparently
does it for me. If I do press NumLock (to turn it back off), all
my binding start working again :-). I guess the default fvwm menu
binding is the only one still visible when NumLock gets turned on
which is why that's the only thing I see.

Off to fix my bindings so they'll work despite Logitech's best efforts
to make me crazy...
