Hi Brian, personally, I don't think the terms "hardware based" and "software
based" firewall mean anything, as all firewalls, regardless of manufacturer
or methodology, are software based, at some level anyway, be that firmware
or whatever. I think that the meaningful terms are "host based" and "network
based" as they actually describe something :)

i.e. : checkpoint software -> host based firewall (it's scope is a single
host, the host it's installed on)
        : pix firewall -> network based firewall (it's scope is an entire
network)
