his could be explained by a performance degradation of the disk subsystem...
usually, however, this can be this serious only if your disk is nearly full,
otherwise the system would use free space to rewrite files. Can you check
for free/used space on that disk?
Also: you mention C: disk, that's the system disk usually. Maybe the system
was doing dynamic increasing of the swapfile, thus filling up the entire
disk. I would recommend checking swapfile settings, as I usually set a fixed
size for it. I would also recommend installing system and application in
separate partitions, and possibly swap space in a dedicated slice of the
disk. This trick alone is good for reducing fragmentation, at least on the
swapfile.
