There's nothing you can do from a network configuration perspecive when you are being flooded, your only real course of action is to contact your ISP and get them involved. What they should do is study the style of attack then either filter at their network boundaries or contact their upstream providers to filter.
A DDOS attack can be combatted, not always 100% effectively of course. Shutting down and waiting for them to stop means they have won, and they may be encouraged to do it again because they know they can bring you down.
