First of all, to answer your first and second quesition you need to go and read IPSO
release not,
but to answer you question for now,, before installing checkpoint or a new IPSO (not a
fresh install) go over IPSO release not to make sure IPSO version is compatible with
your checkpoint version , make sure you got enough space on hard drive, then flow this
step for a new IPSO image:
make directory on var, like download, then FTP your IPSO to download directory, then
go to download directory and follow these instructions:
thisFW[admin]# newimage -k -l -i ipso.tgz
IPSO newimage

This utility will allow you to load a new instance of the IPSO
system software and optional packages. The configuration will
not be modified except for the entries which identify the new
software.
PLEASE NOTE: Any existing optional packages currently installed and
activated will still be activated after the new system software is
installed. You may experience some compatibility issues between the
system software and the existing packages.
To activate new packages or to re-activate existing packages
after the system software is installed and in use, execute 'newpkg'.
Do you wish to continue? [y] y
Load new image from:
1. Install from CD-ROM.
2. Install from anonymous FTP server.
3. Install from FTP server with user and password.
4. Install from local filesystem.
5. Exit new image installation
Choice [1-5]: 4

Enter ipso image file name [ipso.tgz]:

2. Newly installed image [IPSO-3.7.1-BUILD007-03.06.2004-035000-1228]
3. Testboot newly installed image [IPSO-3.7.1-BUILD007-03.06.2004-035000-1228]
(not supported on IP 400 series)
Choose [1-3] [1]: 2
Will use /image/IPSO-3.7.1-BUILD007-03.06.2004-035000-1228 as root for next boot.
To install/upgrade your packages run /etc/newpkg after REBOOT
Please reboot immediately
thisfw[admin]# reboot
NOW FOR INSTALLING checkpoint
thisFW[admin]# cd download
thisFW[admin]# ls
IPSO_wrapper_R54.tgz
thisFW[admin]# newpkg
Load new package from:
1. Install from CD-ROM.

3. Install from FTP server with user and password.
4. Install from local filesystem.
5. Exit new package installation.
