Under advice from Checkpoint sales I have applied an Express license to an existing NG AI R55 Enterprise Nokia cluster (gateway only). I had the same misgivings as you but it worked fine.

The CP express product does have some limitations such as how many enforcement modules are allowed to be controlled by the management server. I think if you do a full install of the CP product and then apply the express license you will end up with issues.
