Yes using the _ works,  however I now have a issue in that anti spoofing is 
configured on this virtual interface and not on the 7 interfaces.  So some of 
the system different that the rest.  Currently all :1 virtual addresses have 
anti spoofing greyed out ???
the new _1 doesnt have this greyed out....

You can name it as you like. So I would suggest to add the virtual IP manually 
and name it hme0_1 instead of hme0:1.
That should do the trick.
