From memory:

Boot using a live linux CD (knoppix will be fine).
You'll need to mount the SPLAT filesystem.
Edit /etc/passd using vi. For the user you need to change, remove the 'x', example:

splattest:x:555:555::/home/test:/bin/bash

becomes

splattest::555:555::/home/test:/bin/bash

This would allow you to log in locally, but not over ssh etc.

You could also remove the password hash from /etc/shadow, but personally, I would grab this and crack it to find out what the old password was...
It could be useful elsewhere. ;-)

yes, sk24666 is more or less a steo by step guide for modifying the
/etc/passwd.

To me, this SK article is not available. The solution it shows is to have a
technical support engineer do it for you. Part of my problem is that my
software support has expired and I can't get to any advanced solutions.
Until I am able to renew this, my question is still whether booting from a
Knoppix cd and changing the password file will actually work.
