Anything else besides bb4? I'm only asking because it sounds a bit strange for 
Check Point to give you such functionality through
Edge and leave it out in FW-1/VPN-1!!! It just is weird in my humble opinion.

We're using http://bb4.org/ for such monitoring. We have set it up to
ping the remote gateways internal ip address.
