Don't ask Nokia for support for non Nokia memory.

Exactly. Nokia is charging high prices, yes, but you can use standard memory in
an IP530. There is nothing "Nokia-specific" it looks for in the SDRAM's EEPROM,
although it does look for encoding that specifies that the right type of memory
has been inserted. That's just good practice and actually JEDEC industry
standard, though.

Specifically, this part has been reported to work in an IP530: Kingston
KVR100X72C2/256, 256 MB 32MX72 100 MHZ ECC CL2.

I think Nokia is not doing differently than any other vendors. Cisco is doing
exactly the
same thing. Have you ever seen the price on the 128MB RAM on the Pix515 or
Pix525?
You can buy either a 128MB or 256MB PC-100 and put in a Cisco Pix and it will
work just
fine. If you purchase these memories from Cisco, it would cost 4 times as
much. Someone
  has to eat I guess.

To take it to another level, you can take the 128MB RAM or 256MB RAM PC-100
from a
Dell box and place it into a Pix 515/525 firewalls and it still works like a
champ.

you say SPLAT? Someone at Nokia high enough up will get the message after it's
too late. What are they thinking? Burning instructions in RAM... Have you gone
insane?

Rumor has it that Nokia has the Manufacture burn a code into the RAM that the
BIOS/CMOS looks for during startup. If the code isn't there, then it won't work
correctly.

I even found RAM that matched up perfectly and it wouldn't work (based on the
SN of a 256 Mb stick of Nokia RAM). After some swapping around with other 530's
I was able to get two boxes to `1Gb, but only with Nokia RAM.

I'm quite surprised, because if you buy the same kind of RAM from the same
manufacturer (don't forget to use ECC modules), how could the box know which
one comes from nokia ?

you can even try to get some RAM on ebay if your favourite reseller cannot sell
you the correct old one.
