Smart Defense alone is just the IPS system built in every Check Point firewall, you can pay just for that and I consider it would be a good addition to your main site, given the fact you currently have protected web and spam content with your Barracuda devices.
I believe you are confusing SmartDefense with Total Security subscription. The first is what I explained above, the second is basically a subscription that includes SD and also antivirus, antispam and web filtering. Moving to the Edge box, bare in mind just paying for SmartDefense will only enable updates for that feature and not Web Filtering and antivirus, which require separate subscriptions for those small appliances as well.
