MRTG is a great bandwith monitoring tool and is particularly easy to
configure. The next generation (free) tool for bandwith monitoring is
Cricket. It is written in Perl and there are quite a few modules you need
to load to get it working. It's more robust than MRTG but with that comes
more difficulty in initial configuration. You can check it out here

I think that a program that a lot of people use for graphing any type of
network performance is MRTG (www.mrtg.org) Its GNU software that can graph
basically anything. But it excels in graphing MIB data. So, anything you can
grab via SNMP you can graph in MRTG. It runs on all kinds of platforms, from
Linux to NT.

Im currently involved in a project to revamp our security policy. In order
to convince the executives here that we need to include a policy concerning
video\audio streaming and various other network hogs, I need to be able to
show that it has an effect on our network. In other words, I need proof
that it's a problem. I'm currently hunting for products that will allow me
to report on what various types of packet traffic is being sent across my
pipe at any given time. I thought that perhaps some of you might have a
few suggestions as far as where to look. Products such as Checkpont's
Floodgate are accomplishing alot more than I really need to and I'm looking
to avoid a hefty pricetag. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
