Ouch!  I guess I know what's the problem.  What definition of "/" are you using?  I
know of two:

1.)  counting the SET bits - then /5 equals the subnet mask 248.0.0.0
2.)  counting the UNSET bits - resulting in a subnet mask of  255.255.255.224

Definition 1) is the more common one (as used in Cisco Routers IIRC).
