I checked them out as thoroughly as I could at the IBM site a while
ago (before I bought my 20-gig 30GN - I downloaded lots of the PDF
files from their web site, see below) and basically there didn't seem
to be any substantial difference between the 30 GN and 40GN lines in
the same size - though the 40GN comes in larger sizes.  I just took it
that the 40GN was newer, replacing the 30GN line.  Don't know that for
sure, though.
