I don't have your model, but here's how it works on the PowerBook 
(Firewire) and the PowerBook G4:

hook everything up.
with the lid open, power on the computer.
immediately close the lid (be very careful in doing this).

(apple recommends you just use a USB keyboard with a power button)

Somewhere during the boot sequence, it realizes that the lid is closed, 
switches the built-in off, and drives the external.

The only kbase article I see about this refers to the PowerBook G3 Series 
(Bronze Keyboard), article #58334 <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
artnum=58334>. I don't know if this applies to your powerbook, the 
PowerBook G3 Series.
