each drive has it's own Desktop Folder... when that drive is mounted, the 
contents of that drive's DF show up on the desktop.

all the stuff that shows up when you connect the external.... just copy it 
to your internal HD. unmount the external and move the data from your 
internal hd back onto the desktop.
