That's a connector problem, pure and simple. Grunge and corrosion in the 
connectors will cause problems like that...putting them in different 
machines means the connectors take slightly different paths in mating, 
which scrapes a bit off, making connections again.

Try cleaning the connectors with contact cleaner. Most contact cleaners 
are ok for plastics, but test it on an inconspicuous part of your pismo 
case before spraying stuff around.
