Just a shot in the dark, but could it somehow be that the 'book may 
trying to output an NTSC signal to a PAL tv or vice versa? This could 
explain the lack of color, and outputting at, say 60Hz instead of 
50Hz (or the other way around) might explain the loss of sync.
