Yes, ADDING another email account is available only to paid customers. However the instructions I referenced are "Converting your .Mac trial account to an email-only account". The trial account is FREE, hence converting a FREE account would indicate that it will continue to be FREE. And if you read the last line in the article I referenced; "At press time, however, the options for completing the procedure are not yet in place." then it's obvious that Apple is adding this option as soon as it can be programmed into their site.
