Tar.gz is a standard UNIX compression filetype. Associate the tar.gz files
with Stuffit-Expander (in short: ctrl+click -> show info->switch to open
with application->Choose Stuffit Expander->Change all).
Then you can double click on the file and it will be unzipped and untarred
and you find a new item with a red icon in the same folder where the tar.gz
is located. Double click on that and you are ready to scan.
