Has he tried trashing his Entourage preference file and let Entourage write a 
new one?

harddrivename/users/hishomefolder/library/preferences/microsoft/entourage 
preferences

Alternatively, has he tried to use the updated Mail application? He may 
discover that he doesn't need to use Entourage.

Did he install the update or Office v.X that Microsoft made available a few
weeks ago?
