They're definitely less expensive, but not, in general, less power-hungry. The Intel chips are better at reducing power requirements when idle. The Apple portables are anyway much better at being portable than their x86-based counterparts---things like near-instant wake-up from sleep, battery life(?), general robustness, both physical and software-wise.
