Mine seems to be a lot worse. I get that warning with 25% or so left
and then it drops _very_ quickly. It seems like it is asleep 5 minutes
after the warning if I don't hurry up and plug it in. The battery
loses 20-25% just being asleep over night, which is about all it is
good for. I bought a new battery which I save for special occasions (I
lacked the foresight to extend my AppleCare :( )

They don't, it's NiCad batteries which have that "memory" effect.

There's no harm trying. It seems like I get about 3 hours or so out of
the brand new one. Having the modem on seems to drain the battery
pretty fast. Whenever I can, I turn my backlight down (or off). When
taking class notes last spring, I generally had the backlight barely
on, since the florescent lights in the classroom helped to light it up!
