Yes, I have tried that.

When I go to that view I see a table with only one row,
"Built-in Ethernet" (in the Port Configurations column),
with a checkmark to the left of it (in the "On" column).

When I click on the "New..." button, there is a
pull-down menu which includes "Built-in Ethernet" as
the ONLY choice.

However the computer does have an internal modem
(56K phone modem built-in to the PowerBook) which works
fine when I am running MacOS 9.1.  I am using that to
connect to my ISP and send/receive e-mail, etc.
