Ralph, Apple identifies it as a "56k V.90 modem". If you're running OS X you basically have two choices of fax software:
FaxSTF and Cocoa e-fax I have seen a lot of bitter complaints about FaxSTF, although it may have improved in recent versions. Cocoa e-fax has a lot of fans although it is a much more basic program. Cocoa e-fax works fine for me. FaxSTF is much more expensive. http://www.macadvocacy.com/cocoaefax.htm You should have gotten an OS 9 version of FaxSTF with your iBook. In my experience FaxSTF works fine in OS 9. I hope this helps.
