generically speaking, external DVD drives don't tend to work (well, if 
at all) with DVD-Video. the DVD decoder (part of the graphics card) is 
mated to specific DVD drives, as well. throughput from the drive 
doesn't tend to meet playback requirements. FireWire may be 400Mbps... 
but your drive won't deliver data anywhere near that fast, and the 
ata->firewire bridge in the iLink case will slow it down further.

side note... even if you have a machine (such as your iBook) that has 
"software decoding" ... calling it "software decoding" is deceptive; 
iirc, it's actually software decrypting of the CSS, the MPEG decoding 
still happens on the graphics card. if you take a brand new G4 tower 
and replace the graphics card with a non-MPEG-decoding card, suddenly 
DVD playback won't work. in "hardware" schemes, both decrypting and 
decoding are handled by hardware.
