FireWire may be 400Mbps... but your drive won't deliver data anywhere near that fast, and the ata->firewire bridge in the iLink case will slow it down further. side note... even if you have a machine (such as your iBook) that has "software decoding" ... calling it "software decoding" is deceptive; iirc, it's actually software decrypting of the CSS, the MPEG decoding still happens on the graphics card. if you take a brand new G4 tower and replace the graphics card with a non-MPEG-decoding card, suddenly DVD playback won't work. in "hardware" schemes, both decrypting and decoding are handled by hardware. -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
