The usual assumption when a manufacturer says their USB device only works with built in USB is sheer laziness on their part. They don't want to support add-in USB cards and assume it's a small market so they can blow it off. Does your USB now work with other devices? It may be a matter of which USB driver you use. A simple solution is to get a flash card adapter to read your camera's memory card on the laptop. This is what I use for the three cameras I work with.
