WD-40 is not really a lubricant. if you look on the can you can see what it is made of. there are much better things on the market. i have a can of a product called dura-lube that is way better. if you check your local auto parts supplier i'm sure you can get a much better product than wd-40.

I was just researching the same problem on my Epson 740.
I went to fixyourownprinter.com and came on these directions for mine:
"Clean the shaft that the cartridge holder slides on. Then put some light
oil on it, but be careful not to spill any. There is a felt piece thatīs
soaked with oil inside the holder and sometimes this gets dry and causes
these problems."
The person used WD40 to lubricate it. I'm planning to do it on my 740,
hopefully your HP would benefit from similar treatment.
