most recent Software Install CDs are fairly universal ... most anything
OS 9 will install onto any machine that shipped with OS 9, with a bunch
of caveats.

In our shop, we use the OS 9.2.2 CD that shipped with a CRT iMac to
install OS 9 on G4 towers, PowerBooks, iBooks, lots of stuff. That
said, we don't do service for anything older than the iMac.

The installer does what's called a 'gestalt check' to find out what
computer you're installing onto. Apple's actually moved away from
Gestalts, and most machines for the last few years have the exact same
Gestalt ID.

The Gestalt for a 1400, though, is nowhere near the Gestalt for your
Pismo, so the Installer says 'no'.
