The fact that restart helps pretty much guarantees this is a software
problem.

Next step is to isolate the offending app if possible. Since you've 
tried
killing 2 of the 4 and that didn't help, you may have narrowed it down
to Office 2k or Quicken 2k.

I would try shutting those down and see if that helps without having
to do a reboot. I seem to recall there may have been memory leaks
in those apps, so restarting them may help.

You could also check to see if there are any patches available for any
of the 4 apps and make sure you are up to date on any fixes.

Other than that, this will be hard to trouble shoot without a lot more
info.
