First things first, zap the PRAM. It's entirely possible that something went
wrong and screwed up the PRAM settings, which can cause unexpected behaviors
similar to this.

<command-option-P-R> during boot. Hold these keys down until you hear the
computer's startup chime three or four times in succession. Then try to boot
from the CD again.
