Even if you are fortunate enough to own Acrobat or Acrobat Exchange, a .pdf file may be "protected" by the originator so that it cannot be altered. A password can be set when the file is originated.
Using Acrobat Reader 5, you can print to PDF, then import into Acrobat, thereby getting round the protection.
This is why Adobe removed Print to PDF in Acrobat 6.
