When I deleted the discontinued email address from the preferences, all that mail disappeared; in spite of a popup appearing to say all would be safe. Of course, putting the address back in did not bring back the emails.

Could they be anywhere else? A search revealed nothing.

did you look in user/ library/ mail and in there are where that users .mbox files are. i've had luck moving .mbox files around before. although, if they arent there i dont know what to tell you..
