well, i finally broke down and installed OSX after getting a larger HD. installed that(IBM travelstar 40 GB - definitely quieter), and put old HD into a firewire enclosure. the old HD reads and writes just fine under OSX, but is not seen when i boot up under OS9 in separate partition (the enclosure power light is on and as OS9 boots the red activity light briefly flashes, but after that it is quiet, and although seen under the system profiler, does not appear on the desktop.
