We have a small network at home and I use file sharing frequently. Since upgrading to Panther I've been confounded by how it is handled now. When I log onto another computer its icon isn't mounted to the desktop or to the sidebar. There's no visual hint at all that I am sharing and no way to log off. At least that's what I thought until this morning.
Have you checked Finder Preferences. In Jaguar there are options there for controlling what kind of drives appear on the desktop, including servers.
