I once had an ethernet port that wasn't working. I bought a PCMCIA card to replace it. Some other things were not working right so I pulled the battery for a day, hit the reset button periodically including when everything was dead, reset the PRAM on startup and whatever else I could think of. (I have been trying to remember if there is another button on the mother board I hit--I don't think so-but I do know that the reset buttons on the G3 laptop are not the same as the buttons on the G4). Low and behold, my ethernet came back--and it was faster and better than it ever had been.
Both PowerBooks and iMacs have power management circuitry that seems to have a tendency to get confused. An iMac I use seems to forget to turn power on to the HD after waking from sleep sometimes. Some other iMacs don't startup, they just have a flashing disk ICON. The usual fix is to pull the plug for a few seconds and then try to startup again.
So yeah, completely powering equipment down sometimes is the fix. I've also encountered that with some other equipment that has soft power control like printers.
