Timothy,

I have a Wallstreet 266 mhz and I finally got a big enough hard drive
for something besides OS9. I put OS9 on the second partition, then
installed OSX on the first partition of 7.5 gigs, and after that it
wouldn't let me boot into OS9. What am I doing wrong?

I have found that from time to time it is necessary to rebuild the classic desktop from within OS X, before X will let you boot up into 9. This is what you need to do, starting within OS X, with nothing else running. You may want to print this out:

1. Open System Preferences (from the Apple Menu)
2. Click on "Startup Disk" in System Preferences Panel.
3. Click on the System 9 folder that you want to eventually start up from*. DO NOT click "restart" at this point.
4. Click on the "show all" button a the top; when asked if you are sure you want to change the startup disk, click the "change" button to proceed.
5. Click on the "Classic" button in the system preferences window.
6. Wait a moment, then be sure the same system folder that you previously designated as the startup disk is now selected in the list of classic system folders. DO NOT click "start".
7. Click on the "advanced" tab in the Classic window.
8. Click on the "rebuild desktop" button at the bottom of the window, and allow the process to finish.
9. Now quit the System Preferences.
10. Restart your Mac. You can hold down the "option" key at the very beginning of startup, to bring up a window allowing you to choose what system to boot into. I find that occasionally I will choose the System 9 partition, but during startup it will switch to X. This problem is invariably solved by rebuilding the Classic desktop, as instructed above.

*If the System 9 folder doesn't appear here, it means you do not have a valid System 9 startup folder. This may be an issue of "blessing" the system folder, for which you need to start up from a System 9 CD, then open the unblessed system folder, and "get info" on the system and finder. Then restart under X and continue with the above steps.

I hope this helps you, or other listreaders.

-Jim.
