I think Laurent is correct that FireWire Target mode is the best option, but I thought you held down 'T' as the book starts. At least, that's how my Ti and my iBook Indago work.
In either case, from another Mac (OS 9 or X) it looks just like a standard drive and you can go in and pick out what you want. I have done this for a few people having problems with their logic board and it worked fine. If things are stable, you can also use 'Disk Utility' to create a disk image of the HD.
