Does her iBook has FireWire ports? If so, she could try to start it in
FireWire mode, where you restart the computer and then press 'F' and the
computer becomes a FireWire hard drive.


Of course, with all the problems she had, this is assuming that FireWire and
the hard drive are still working...

It's "T" to start up in FW target mode. The OP was trying to hook up to a rev B iMac, and they don't have FireWire. You'd have to try hooking it up to the Dell, but I'm not sure about that one recognizing a Mac-formatted drive. If the computer is truly dead, remove the HD and borrow a friend's PB to transfer data.
