Well, first of all, I would check that OS ;)

Kidding aside, it sounds to me like you got a defective drive.  Try it on
another machine, if you have one available, and if you continue to have
problems, return it.  Remember that bad drives can show different symptoms
under different circumstances, so the problems on another OS or another
machine may differ somewhat.
