Just so we don't start another myth: the saying predates Jimmy Hoffa by many years (if not centuries). It's one of those proverbs that everyone would love to have invented. (I'm just surprised it's not been attributed to Churchill yet!). It's been made famous in modern times by Margaret Atwood in "The Handmaid's Tale" (Offred finds it written in a closet), but she did not invent it either.

Here's my favorite (modern) latin proverb:

Semper in excreta sumus solum profundum variat.
[We're] Always in sh*t but the depth varies.

Hmm - wonder waht the latin is for: Everyday you can learn something new -
