I always do a reformat and a clean install. Usually, I clone my current
installation on an external FireWire drive, so if something is really wrong,
I can always go back, but everything seems to be fine, then I bring back a
few files from my previous installation, checking each time if everything is
still working as it should. Things I bring back are my network locations,
global, third party preference panes and the likes. If I have some
preferences for some applications that I don't want to lose, then I bring
them back as well from my clone copy. It has always been working well for me
and never had any major issue.
