As an mobile OSX-user, I wonder if it would be a good idea to use a fast (512MB, 10MB/s sustained read) formatted CompactFlash card inserted into my PCMCIA-slot (incl. adaptor) as a drive strictly for the use of Virtual Memory. Or is my my standard 4800rpm HD still a better solution for Virtual Memory.

Compact flash cards are not designed for high I/O operations like this. If you poke around, you will note that the cells in the cards are rated for X number of read/write cycles before they start to degrade.

You would be better off purchasing another 512MB DIMM module for your 17" Powerbook if you are running into VM issues. If that still doesn't solve the problem, bump the machine to 2GB and/or have an Apple Store or other authorized facility put a faster hard drive in. There are 7200 RPM laptop drives available now.
