I had somewhat similar problems (but only on shutdown)
when I upgraded my G3/250 WS running OS 8.1 to G4/500
(Sonnet upgrade card, upgrading to 9.1 at the same time).
It took about eight months (!) to diagnose the problem
(with the help of a Mac expert via e-mail). It seems to have been
an extension conflict with the Iomega extension. Just putting
a tilde (~) before it solved the problem
