Just my 2 cents but you may want to go to a large retail store and try on Altec Lansing
Portable speakers for iPods, and also from Monster Cables the iSpeakers Portable.
That might just be the thing for you. Also a great set of ear/head phones could do the trick.
Sony (among others) have a wide variety, so does Shure and even Wireless ones.
