Since I initially raised this issue, AOL is working again, but I had a series of crashes on startup. TechTool, Disk Utility, and DiskWarrior are all happy with the computer. My working theory now is Norton, which I am increasingly viewing as evil. I have uninstalled everything but AntiVirus, for which I have turned off daily checks, and the system is working fine.

Macfixit.com basically says that 10.3.3 is going well, but there are complaints of a number of issues that you may want to check. Having said that, I have always found after every change to the system that the coverage on macfixit makes me want to take poison. I do appreciate their reminder to make sure your disk is healthy and backed up before launching into an update.

I now view Norton as the real Microsoft as a source of disdain. Any recommendations for other virus programmes so that I could leave Norton behind completely?

John
